Baseball Drops Doubleheader at WKU

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Marshall baseball (4-17, 0-10 C-USA) fell in both games of a doubleheader on Friday to the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers (14-16, 4-6 C-USA) in Bowling Green, Ky. The Herd fell 1-0 in game one and 5-1 in game two.
Game 1
Center fielder Luke Edwards led off the contest with a single, but was caught stealing.
The Herd put the pressure on the Hilltoppers in the top of the third as right fielder Devin Ward and Edwards each collected one-out singles and second baseman Travis Sankovich drew a walk to have the bases loaded. However, first baseman Zach Inskeep grounded into an inning-ending double play as the game remained scoreless.
Catcher Ryan Leitch singled in the fifth and seventh innings, but the MU offense was unable to bring him home.
Marshall starting pitcher Chad Heiner was on fire in the contest. Through the first six innings, he gave up just one hit and struck out four WKU batters.
In the bottom of the seventh, Heiner recorded the first two outs of the inning with a groundout and a fly out. After a first pitch ball, WKU's Jackson Gray hit a walk-off homer as Marshall fell 1-0.
Game 2
Edwards led game two off with a double and after being moved over on a Sankovich groundout, third baseman Peter Hutzal brought him home on a sacrifice fly to give the Herd an early lead.
Starting pitcher Patrick Copen made the first start of his collegiate career giving up just an unearned run in the first in his 2.0 innings pitched. The freshman righty gave up no hits, two walks and struck out one Hilltopper.
WKU added a run in the third to take a 2-1 lead as Ryan Leitch singled for MU in the top of the fourth, but was not brought home.
The Hilltoppers added another run in the bottom of the fourth.
Relief pitcher Ryan Capuano threw 2.0 innings without a run on his stat line giving up two hits and a walk, while striking out one.
Right fielder Josh Pigozzo and Edwards led off the sixth with singles, but a double play derailed the inning for the Herd.
The Hilltoppers added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to down the Herd.

The Herd is back in action on Saturday for game three at WKU with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. ET/2 p.m. CT.
