MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Marshall track and field athletes broke three school records and earned one event victory to conclude the Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Sunday hosted by Middle Tennessee.
The Thundering Herd finished the meet in sixth out of 13 schools with 58 points. It is the program's best team finish since the conference moved to 13 schools, and the 58 team points is tied with 2019 for the second-most points scored at a C-USA Outdoor Championships (2013, 63).
"I am really proud of the entire team's efforts," head coach Jeff Small said. "From every thrower setting a lifetime best to our hurdlers, sprinters and distance runners making finals and crushing school records, it was just so much fun to be part of."
In her final meet, Huntington native Safiyyah Mitchell earned a long-awaited Conference USA title. The graduate senior won the 100 meter hurdles with a winning time of 13.51. Entering Sunday, she had finished runner-up in five Conference USA indoor or outdoor meets in either the 60 meter hurdles or 100 meter hurdles.
She is the first school C-USA Champion in a running event and she earned the sixth Herd event victory at the C-USA Outdoor Championships.
"The highlight of the meet, if not my career, was watching Safiyyah Mitchell become the first Marshall athlete to win a Conference USA title in a running event," Small said. "She had placed second in the hurdles at both the indoor and outdoor championships five times during her career. Despite being a full-time student in Marshall's Pharmacy School this year, she used her last remaining season of eligibility and won a championship!"
Senior Taylor Robinson also joined Mitchell on the podium, earning All-C-USA honors for the first time in her career. She finished third in the event with a personal record time of 13.85.
Mikah Alleyne, in her first outdoor season, broke the school record in the 400m for the fourth time this season, and second consecutive day. She finished fourth with a time of 53.45.
Ashonti Warner hit a personal record and set the school record in the 400 meter hurdles finals. She finished fourth with a time of 59.06.
Abby Herring broke the school record in the 1500m which had stood since 2004, held by Varinka Barbini (4:37.99). Her time impressively broke it by over five seconds, as she ran in 4:32.84. She finished eighth in the event.
Tori Dotson earned three team points for her performance in the 800m finals. She finished sixth with a time of 2:16.25.
MaryAnn Adebayo earned one point for Marshall in team standings in the shot put. She finished eighth with a top throw of 13.70 meters (44 feet, 11.50 inches). Rebecca Merritt finished behind her in ninth (13.46m/44 ft. 2 in.).
The meet concluded with the 4x400m relay team of Erica Murphy, Mikah Alleyne, Ashonti Warner, Danere'a White finishing in 3:45.87, which earned four team points for their fifth-place performance.
