CONWAY, S.C. – The Marshall University baseball team (16-35, 5-23 Sun Belt) dropped its series opener 9-3 to the eighth-ranked Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (35-17, 21-7 Sun Belt) on Friday in Conway, South Carolina.
Â
"We got beat by a good baseball team tonight, but we continue to make mistakes in critical situations that could have very much changed the complexion of the ballgame," Herd baseball head coach Greg Beals said after the game.
Â
In the top of the fourth, Kyle Schaefer launched his seventh homer of the season, scoring Daniel Carinci. It was the 29th of Schaefer's career, tying him for eighth all-time in program history.
Â
Owen Ayers brought home Kebler Peralta with his 21st double of the season in the top of the eighth. Ayers is one two bagger away from tying Eric Pinkerton's single-season record of 22 set in 2000.
