Marshall Baseball Drops Close Contest To Cougars

Herd bullpen continues strong pitching in 2-1 loss on Sunday

Box Score

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Marshall Baseball got a strong pitching effort on Sunday, but found itself on the wrong side of a 2-1 loss to College of Charleston at The Ballpark at Patriots Point.

"We had a very strong pitching performance by all three of our guys today," Marshall Baseball coach Greg Beals said. "Offensively, we continue to struggle getting things started and getting the big hit when needed."

Marshall (0-3) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning after Tre Hondras doubled to lead off the game and later scored following an RBI groundout from Owen Ayers.

College of Charleston later tied the game in the third with a two-out RBI single. After a walk loaded the bases, Griffin Miller entered for starter Carter Lyles and got a strikeout to escape the jam.

"Griffin Miller got his collegiate debut in a tough bases loaded situation and responded with a strikeout to end the inning," Beals said.

Miller battled to keep the game locked over the fourth and fifth innings with each helping to keep the game tied up after the Cougars threatened in each frame.

However, the sixth inning would produce the game-winning run with a walk, an error, a hit batsman and another walk leading to a run without a hit before Nicholas Weyrich was able to get consecutive strikeouts to limit the damage.

For the second-straight day, Marshall's bullpen was excellent for Beals, going 6.1 innings of relief without allowing an earned run.

Over the past two games, Marshall's bullpen has gone 12 2/3 innings without giving up an earned run.

"We have played better each day out and need that to continue into tomorrow to get out of here with a 'W'," Beals said.

The Herd will look to get its first win in the final contest of the series at 1 p.m. on Monday at The Ballpark at Patriots Point. Chad Heiner will get the start on the mound for the Herd.
