Offensive Explosion Powers Herd Baseball over Michigan State

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The Marshall University Baseball team (1-4) picked up its first win of the season a 20-run offensive outburst in a 20-10 win over the Michigan State Spartans (1-5) on Friday in Port Charlotte, Florida, at the Snowbird Classic.

The 20 runs mark the most scored by MU since March 10, 2019, against Eastern Michigan in a 25-3 win.

"Our offense broke out today," Herd baseball head coach Greg Beals said after the victory. "We did a little bit of everything offensively – bunt, run, hit for power and timely hitting. We got a solid pitching performance from (Drew) Harlow to start."

The Herd exploded for four multi-run innings with a nine-run barrage in the bottom of the sixth. Calin Smith, who went 4-for-5 in the ballgame with five RBI, brought home three of the those runs in on a pair of singles in the inning.

Jack Firestone brought home a pair of runs in the sixth on a single. Firestone brought home four runs and scored three more while recording three singles in four at bats in the win.

On the bump, Drew Harlow earned his first win of the season throwing 5.0 innings while allowing just three runs on three hits and a walk while striking out five Spartans.

Marshall recorded a pair of triples in the ballgame with a three-run, two-out triple from Caden Kaiser in the fifth and a two-run scoring triple in the sixth by Elijah Vogelsong.

Owen Ayers launched his first homer of the season down the left-field line with two outs in the fourth.

Nicholas Weyrich hurled a scoreless relief inning in the sixth, allowing just one hit and a walk.

Also at the plate, Gio Ferraro reached base three times, scored three runs, including a steal of home, and with a pair of singles. Kebler Peralta found the base paths four times and scored twice.
