PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The Marshall University Baseball team (1-6) fell to Indiana State in extra innings, 5-4, and dropped a contest to Michigan State (2-5) Saturday in day two of the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Florida.
Owen Ayers went 4-for-9 in the pair of contests, including a homer and a double, with three RBI in the pair of the games.
"Tough lose today in game one bs Indiana State - our guys competed very well and simply came up a play short against a very good ball club," Herd baseball head coach Greg Beals said after the second day of action at the Snowbird Classic. "In game two against Michigan State, we pitched the ball fairly well, but got beat by their pitcher - Powers. He did a great job of mixing his pitches and keeping the ball at the bottom of the strike zone. I look forward to playing Indiana State again tomorrow - we simply need to find a way to get the big plays in the big moments."
Indiana State 5, Marshall 4 F/10
In game one of the day, Jack Firestone put Marshall on the board first with an RBI single in the top of the fourth to score Caden Kaiser. It was Firestone's fifth RBI of the weekend.
Starting on the bump was Cole Agemy, who threw three hitless frames to start his eventual 5.0 inning outing. Agemy struck out three Sycamores while giving up just two runs on three hits and walk.
Ayers then tied the game, 2-2, with his second homer of the Snowbird Classic on a solo shot to right center in the top of the sixth and then tied the contest again in the top of the eighth with a single to left to score Cam Harthan.
Elijah Vogelsong led off the 10th with a pinch-hit home run to right field for his first of the season.
Out of the bullpen, Griffin Miller struck out three in 2.0 innings of work as Nicholas Weyrich hurled two hitless frames while allowing only one walk.
Michigan State 6, Marshall 2
Ayers along with AJ Havrilla each went 2-for-4 in game two of the day with an RBI each.
Ayers doubled home Tre Hondras with one out in the top of the first as Havrilla smoked a single to center to score Ayers later in the inning.
A pair of two-run innings in the third and fifth helped the Spartans.
Lenny Washington threw a scoreless bottom of the eight, striking out one Michigan State batter.
