HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – With a walk-off single from Caden Kaiser in the 11th inning, the Marshall University Baseball team (12-19) downed the West Virginia Mountaineers (19-13) at Jack Cook Field, 3-2, on Wednesday night.
The Herd is now 10-4 at Jack Cook Field, not dropping a series or a midweek game at the new ballpark.
"An all-out, team victory right there," Herd Baseball Greg Beals said about the win over the Mountaineers. "That's what I told the guys. It was everybody. Everybody had a little piece in it. I thought we pitched the ball extremely well today. We executed on a team that had given us fits offensively in the first two games. We executed our pitching very well. We executed our team defense. Obviously, the pickoff play was a huge play in the baseball game. Caden Kaiser gets the big hit, the game winner. I'm really happy for our guys."
Kaiser stepped to the plate in the bottom of the 11th, with two outs and Calin Smith at second, Jack Firestone at third as Marshall had not led during the ballgame. The graduate student sent the 2-2 offering back up the middle for an RBI single for The Herd's first extra-inning win of the season. Kaiser went 3-for-6 at the dish in the victory, his third three-hit game of the season.
"I was trying to hit a fastball and I caught a hanging changeup out front, and got it up the middle," Kaiser said about the pitch he hit for the game-winning run. "I kind of blacked out for a second (as I ran to first), but anytime we can get a walk-off, we can beat West Virginia, it's a lot of fun."
Nicholas Weyrich, who finished the game with two scoreless innings for his first win of the season, picked up MU with a great pick off move in top half of the frame resulting in a 1-4-5-3 double play to take away WVU's momentum and gave The Herd a chance for the walk-off in the next half inning.
Marshall tied the game, 2-2, in the bottom of the ninth as Cam Harthan scored from second on a WVU error.
A Tre Hondras RBI double scored Elijah Vogelsong for MU's first run of the game in the bottom of the sixth.
Chad Heiner started on the bump allowing just one run on two hits and a walk across three innings of work.
Out of the bullpen, Alex McKay relieved Heiner hurling 3.0 scoreless frames to go with four strikeouts. Peyton Schofield allowed just one run on two hits in 1.2 innings as Griffin Miller recorded the final out of the eighth and finished the ninth 1.1 scoreless innings.
