HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (13-24, 6-10 Sun Belt) captured game one, 4-2, on Friday night at Jack Cook Field over the Old Dominion Monarchs (19-18, 8-8 Sun Belt) behind stellar pitching and timely hitting.

"I'm really proud of our guys. We had a tough week," Herd Baseball head coach Greg Beals said after the game. "We worked through some things. We got some guys healthy. That certainly helps. That was a good baseball game."

Three of Marshall's four runs were scored with two outs as the team went 6-for-14 with two outs and held ODU 0-for-9 at the dish with two outs.

"We had a sacrifice bunt, we had some stolen bases and we had some two-out hits. More than a couple of our hits were with two outs," Beals said.

On the bump, Drew Harlow hurled his fifth quality start of the season giving up just two runs on four hits and no walks while striking out nine across 7.0 innings for his sixth win of the season.

"I attacked the zone with my fastball," Harlow said after the game. "I had a good feel with my breaking ball today, which I struggle a little more with in my arsenal. Then late in the game I stuck with my changeup."

Nicholas Weyrich followed in relief with two frames of hitless baseball with a pair of punchouts for his fourth save of the season.

The Herd went down early on a leadoff homer, but Owen Ayers singled with two outs in the bottom of the third and AJ Havrilla brought him home with a double to right center to tie the game 1-1. Havrilla extended his on-base streak to 19 games with Ayers extending his streak to 17 contests.

Tre Hondras reached on a leadoff single the next inning. After stealing two bases, he scored on a wild pitch to give MU its first lead of the contest.

Marshall added its second two-out run of the contest as Kebler Peralta brought home Ethan Murdoch on a single in the sixth to make it 3-1.

The Monarchs scored a run on another homer in the seventh, but The Herd answered with an insurance run in the eighth as Hondras scored on a Calin Smith RBI double to make it 4-2.

UP NEXT
The Herd is set for game two on Saturday against the Monarchs with a 7 p.m. first pitch at Jack Cook Field.
