Vogelsong homers twice in big road win
Â
HARRISONBURG, Va. – Behind 11 runs on 14 hits, including four homers, the Marshall University Baseball team (17-34, 9-18 Sun Belt) picked up a big 11-7 road win in Harrisonburg, Virginia, Sunday afternoon over the James Madison Dukes (30-20, 15-12 Sun Belt).
Â
Elijah Vogelsong launched a pair of homers and drove in five RBI in the victory, both career highs. The junior now leads MU with nine home runs this season.
Â
"The bats came alive today," Herd Baseball head coach Greg Beals said about his offense's performance. "We had gutsy performances on the mound from all our guys. Solid start for (Griffin) Miller, big innings out of (Peyton) Schofield and (Nicholas) Weyrich shut it down. Eli Vogelsong had a great day capped off by a sports center diving catch. We also got a huge double play turned by our middle infielders."
Â
Peyton Schofield registered his second win of the season with 3.0 innings of one-run baseball allowing just three hits in relief. Also out of the bullpen, Nicholas Weyrich pitched a scoreless ninth working around a hit and a walk with three strikeouts.
Â
Griffin Miller started on the mound going 4.0 innings with a pair of strikeouts.
Â
The offensive outburst was started by Vogelsong as he hit a three-run homer in the top of the second scoring AJ Havrilla and Caden Kaiser.
Â
Vogelsong homered again in the third as part of a six-run frame with a two-run homer scoring Havrilla again. Kaiser also hit a two-run blast that scored Gio Ferraro after Ferraro had plated Cam Harthan with a single. The final run of the inning came on Tre Hondras double that brought home Calin Smith.
Â
Hondras brought home another run in the fifth inning with Vogelsong scoring on a groundout.
Â
Ethan Murdoch tallied the final run of the contest for The Herd on a no-doubt home run to left in the seventh.
