Leon and Wilson each with two RBI; Weyrich 3.1 scoreless in relief
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (3-6) opened its 2025 home schedule with a 5-4 win over the FDU Knights (0-8) at Jack Cook Field on Friday afternoon to open a three-game series.
"First two weeks on the road, the guys were excited to be back here at home and we came out of the gates really hot," Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said after the victory. "We had a good gameplan with their starting pitcher and capitalized on it early to get those three runs (in the first). That allows your pitching to settle in a little bit. Bryce gave us a tough outing and got us deep into the sixth inning. Then Nicholas Weyrich was really good."
The Herd had a trio of batters with two hits in the win as Cam Harthan, Nolan Wilson and Eddie Leon each went 2-for-4 at the plate. Harthan and Wilson each registered a pair of RBI.
Bryce Blevins earned his first win of the season going 5.2 on the mound allowing four runs on six hits and striking out three. Nicholas Weyrich recorded his second save of the year hurling 3.1 scoreless frames allowing just one hit and two walks with four punchouts out of the bullpen.
Marshall used two-out lighting in the bottom of the first to gain the early lead. Harthan drew a leadoff walk and stole second. Jackson Halter then drew a free pass with one out, but after an AJ Havrilla lineout Wilson stepped to the dish with two outs. In a 3-1 count, the catcher drove a pitch to right to clear the bases and make it 2-0.
Elijah Vogelsong was then hit by a pitch, but Tyler Kamerer smoked the first pitch of his at bat to right center to bring home Wilson and make it 3-0 with three two-out runs for MU in the first.
FDU tied the contest with a run in the top of third and a pair in the fourth, but Marshall rallied back in the bottom of the fourth. After a one-out walk issued to Ethan Murdoch and an infield single by Leon, Harthan stepped to the plate.
The junior hit the opening pitch of his plate appearance to left center to bring home both Murdoch and Leon to put MU's advantage back at two runs, 5-3.
In the top of sixth, the Knights had the bases loaded with one out. Blevins induced a groundball, but The Herd just missed on a double play as the scoreboard read 5-4. Weyrich then came in and after loading the bases, stuck out Felix Gonzalez looking to end the inning.
Weyrich then stranded a pair in scoring position in the seventh before finishing the game with a pair of 1-2-3 innings in the eighth and ninth to seal the home opener.
