HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall University Baseball team (18-17, 6-8 SBC) evened its series against the App State Mountaineers (18-16, 8-6 SBC) on Saturday with a 5-1 win at Jack Cook Field.

"I thought overall, we pitched the ball very well today and Griffin set the tempo for it. Big three outs and a zero from Krebs, then Weyrich shut it down," Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said after the game. "We had two big hits early in the game with a triple by Murdoch and then the homerun hit by Maika. When you give this pitching staff a five-run lead it gives them a little bit of room and they can pitch not under extreme stress."

Starting pitcher Griffin Miller hurled 7.0 innings on the bump, allowing just an unearned run on six hits and striking out eight Mountaineers. Charlie Krebs and Nicholas Weyrich came on from the bullpen for scoreless eighth and ninth innings.

At the dish, Maika Niu recorded his team-leading 14th multi-hit effort with a double and his fourth homer of 2025 while also driving in a pair of runs for the sixth time of the season. Ethan Murdoch registered his team-best eighth multi-RBI game of the season.

After Jackson Halter and AJ Havrilla each drew walks to lead off the game, Murdoch stepped to the plate with runners at the corners and one out. The designated hitter smoked the first pitch of his at bat to right center bringing home Halter and Havrilla with his first triple of the season.

Murdoch then scored on a Tyler Kamerer groundout to make it 3-0 after one.

Then with one out in the bottom of the third. Havrilla singled to left to bring Niu to the plate. With a 0-1 count, the shortstop hit a ball down the right field wall and over the fence for his fourth homer of the season making it 5-1.

App State's lone run came in the top of the fifth inning, but MU pitching held the visitors off the board from the sixth on.
