ATHENS, Ohio – The Marshall University Baseball team (17-16) picked up a midweek win over the Ohio Bobcats (8-23), 10-5, Wednesday night in Athens, Ohio.
Â
"It's always good to win and keep the momentum going for us," Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said. "We started out a little slow tonight. I know we scored early, we got some help in that, but once we got to the back half of the game, I really liked how we played."
Â
Jackson Halter. AJ Havrilla, Maika Niu and Elijah Vogelsong all had multi-hit games. Halter reached base in all five of his plate appearances also drawing a walk and being hit by a pitch twice with Niu registering a pair of doubles. Vogelsong tallied three RBI for third time this season.
Â
Havrilla launched his third homer of the season, second against the Bobcats this season, to grab the team-lead in RBI at 26.
Â
The Herd rolled out nine pitchers in the ballgame with Peyton Jackson, Blaine Albright, Fenix DiGiacomo, Tim Baird and Nicholas Weyrich hurling a perfect frame each. Kenyon Collins and Charlie Krebs each had scoreless outings with Krebs earning his third win of the season going 1.2 innings.
Â
MU got on the board early with a Niu two-RBI double, an Ethan Murdoch RBI on a fielder's choice, a Vogelsong RBI single and a Nolan Wilson sacrifice fly to take a 4-0 advantage through the first.
Â
Tyler Kamerer then brought home Havrilla with a bases-loaded walk to make it 5-0 in the second.
Â
However, Ohio three in the bottom of the second and a pair in the bottom of the fifth tie the ballgame 5-5.
Â
Marshall quickly answered in the top of the sixth. A Halter walk and a Niu double put runners in scoring position with one out. Murdoch followed with a groundout that scored Halter to give The Herd a 6-5 led. Kamerer drew another walk and stole second to put a pair in scoring position with two outs. Vogelsong cleared the bags with a single up the middle to extend the lead to three.
Â
With two outs in the seventh, Halter singled to bring up Havrilla. Havrilla added a pair of insurance runs on a two-run blast to give the MU a 10-5 lead.
Â
DiGiacomo, Baird and Weyrich closed out the game with 1-2-3 innings in the seventh, eighth and ninth, respectively/
