STATESBORO, Ga. – The Marshall University Baseball team (12-8, 4-0 SBC) took the series opener in a 14-inning battle, 17-16, Friday night in Statesboro, Georgia, over the Georgia Southern Eagles in the team's first Sun Belt Conference road contest of 2026.

Gritty win for the Herd tonight, Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said. Strong pitching out of Krebs, Gunn and Baird, and it was great to see Jackson Halter break out a bit tonight. Our defense was the difference in the ball game.

Charlie Krebs hurled 5.1 scoreless innings of one-hit baseball with six strikeouts in relief. Tim Baird earned his first win of the season striking out five in 1.2. Davis Gunn also struck out the side in the 11th.

The Herd had six with multi-hit games led by Jackson Halter and Jack Smith registering four each. Smith, Jackson Golden and Tyler Kamerer each had three RBI in the game.

After Davis Gunn struck out the side in the bottom of the 11th, Halter gave MU the lead, 10-9, with his fourth homer of the season in the top of the 12th for the first run for either side since the top of sixth after 18 runs were tallied in the first 5.5 innings.

The Eagles tied the game with a run in the bottom half of the 12th on a Bryson Trammell double as he was moved over to third on a sacrifice bunt. After a pair of intentional walks, Baird came on from the bullpen and stranded the bases loaded with a pair of strikeouts.

The graduate right-hander then struck out the side in a scoreless 13th to send the contest to the 14th.

MU popped off in the top of the 14th. Halter led off with a single. After an out, Cam Harthan reached on an error and put runners in scoring position. An intentional walk to Oliver Service loaded the bases with one out and Cleary Simpson stepping to the plate. The third baseman singled to score Halter and put Marshall back on top.

Jack Smith was then hit by a pitch to score Harthan and a Golden single up the middle chased home Simpson and Service to make it 14-10. Kamerer then singled home Smith with a two-out error scoring Golden and Kamerer to see the visitors take a 17-10 advantage.

Georgia Southern rallied with six runs, including three with two outs, in the bottom half of the frame, but Peyton Jackson got the final out of the game, stranding two, to seal the series opener.

The Herd scored third on a two-RBI triple from Kamerer and a Halter sacrifice fly. Fourth in the fifth on a bases-loaded walk to Simpson, on a Smith single, a wild pitch and a GS error.

MU's other two runs came in the sixth on two-out singles by Smith and Golden.
