Â
STATESBORO, Ga. – The Marshall University Baseball team (13-8, 5-0 SBC) won its fifth straight Sun Belt Conference game and clinched its fourth straight series this season with a 13-5 victory on Saturday in Statesboro, Georgia, over Georgia Southern.
Â
"Another win and another solid pitching performance backed up by really good defense," Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said. "The real story today was our offense though, we had a great approach and gave tough at bats all day long."
Â
Oliver Service went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and a homer. Tyler Kamerer had a 3-for-4 day with four runs scored and a triple as Cooper Hinson also had a 3-for-4 day with a pair of RBI and a double.
Â
Jackson Halter collected three hits and three RBI with Cleary Simpson driving home a team-high four RBI.
Â
Starting pitcher Drew Harlow earned his third win of the season with 6.0 innings of work allowing three runs working around six hits and four walks with a strikeout.
Â
Service led off the scoring with a one-out solo homer, his second of the season, in the top of the second.
Â
The Eagles tallied a pair in the bottom half of the frame, but the Herd bats kicked into gear. In the top of the third, MU loaded the bases to start the frame with Evan Botton and Kamerer singling and Halter being hit by a pitch.
Â
Then an AJ Havrilla bases loaded walk, a balk, and sacrifice flies from Hinson and Simpson capped off a four-run frame to take a 5-2 advantage.
Â
Then in the fourth, a Halter RBI single made it 6-2. Another two runs crossed in the fifth on a Simpson ground and a Wil Gubba single to right, extending the advantage to 8-2.
Â
GS struck for a run in the bottom of the fifth, but MU answered with Kamerer crossing home on a Hinson RBI single and Halter scoring on a Simpson sacrifice fly to take a 10-3 lead.
Â
The Herd tallied its final three runs of the ballgame on a Halter two-RBI double and another Simpson groundout to go up 13-3.
Â
The Eagles added a run in each of the seventh and ninth innings, but Marshall shutdown the game with Hunter Richardson and A.J. McAninch each striking out a pair across the final three frames.
