BOONE, N.C. – The Marshall University Baseball team (14-14, 6-4 SBC) picked up a series-opening win over App State (14-4, 3-7 SBC), 12-6, in Boone, North Carolina, on Thursday night.
We played a really good game of baseball tonight, Herd Baseball Head Coach Greg Beals said. Bryce weathered the storm, made an adjustment and competed his tail off for us. Davis Gunn came in to finish it off by pounding the strike zone. Offensively, we were relentless tonight in our approach with big hits up and down the lineup led by Jackson Golden's four hits.
Jackson Golden led the way at the plate with a 4-for-5 night to go with two RBI and two runs scored. Evan Bottone and Cooper Hinson each had a three-hit, two-RBI effort with Tyler Kamerer also driving in a pair of runs.
On the mound, Bryce Blevins hurled 8.0 innings to earn his fifth win of the season as Davis Gunn came on to throw a perfect ninth inning out of the bullpen.
Marshall loaded the bases to start the ballgame with a Bottone single, Kamerer hit-by-pitch and Jackson Halter bunt single. AJ Havrilla was then hit by a pitch for the first of three times to plate Bottone and make it 1-0. One batter later Hinson hit into a one-out groundout to score Kamerer and make it 2-0 after the top of the first.
The Mountaineers answered with a run in the bottom of the first and two in the second to take a 3-2 advantage over the Herd.
MU battled back with a Bottone single scoring Jack Smith and Halter reaching on a two-out error in the top of the fourth to score Golden and make it 4-3. App State tallied three runs in the bottom of the frame to go back up 6-4.
However, the Herd answered back with a Golden RBI single, a Bottone RBI double and a Kamerer two-RBI double in the top of the fifth regain the lead at 8-6.
A Smith sacrifice fly and another Golden RBI single in the sixth with Cam Harthan and Hinson two-out RBI singles finished capped off eight unanswered runs to make it 12-6.
Blevins finished his outing with scoreless sixth, seventh and eighth innings as Gunn finished the contest with his perfect frame in the ninth to close it out.
