Track and Field Begins Outdoor Season At 49er Classic

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall track and field will begin the outdoor portion of its 2021 schedule Friday at the two-day 49er Classic hosted by Charlotte.

After the 2020 outdoor season was canceled for all spring sport programs, it will be the first outdoor competition for the Herd track and field program since May 2019.

"It was a great indoor season with a lot of break through performances," head coach Jeff Small said. "We can't wait to see what happens outdoors!"

Marshall continues competition after concluding the 2021 indoor schedule with its best finish in program history in points and placement at the C-USA Indoor Championships. The Herd finished sixth out of 12 programs with a point total of 50.

In addition to Conference USA opposition and hosts Charlotte, Marshall will compete against athletes from six other schools: Davidson, East Tennessee State, Queens, UNC Greensboro, USC Upstate and Winthrop.

Friday's action for Thundering Herd athletes begins at 3 p.m. with Brooke Burns, Rebecca Merritt and Josie Moore set to compete in the hammer throw. Freshman Chloe Cahill is set to make her collegiate debut in javelin at approximately 4:45 p.m.

Competition on Saturday begins at 11 a.m. with Mariah Harmon scheduled to go in the long jump.

For the outdoor season, the program welcomes back graduate seniors Safiyyah Mitchell and Danere'a White, who each have eligibility remaining for outdoor track and field.
