Game two is first tie for Thundering Herd since 2008
HUNTINGTON, W.Va.—Marshall baseball played consecutive extra-inning games as part of a Sunday doubleheader at the Kennedy Center Field. Canisius won the opener, a nearly five-hour contest which took 13 innings, 11-9. The second game and the series finale with Canisius was deemed a tie after darkness halted the contest.
The game finished 2-2, and it is the first tie for Marshall since April 6, 2008 when Marshall tied with then-Conference USA opponent Tulane, 5-5, in New Orleans.
Marshall is 1-8-1 for the season.
Game One: Canisius 11, Marshall 9 (13)
Sophomore Luke Edwards began scoring for the Thundering Herd in the first inning, as his RBI double scored Geordon Blanton to give Marshall an early 1-0 lead.
Then, trailing 3-1 in the third, junior Jaren Lovely knocked his second home run of the season, a 3-run blast scoring Edwards and Zach Inskeep. A Sam Linscott double later in the inning would give the Thundering Herd a 5-3 advantage after three.
The Golden Griffins retook the lead until the fifth inning when Canisius pitching walked three straight batters, including Nick Jodway who earned a RBI on his free pass with the bases-loaded.
Marshall found itself down once again, 9-6, in the eighth inning when Lovely drove in two more runs on a single scoring Edwards and Peter Hutzal.
In the 9th, down to its final out, Edwards would be clutch by delivering a RBI double to score pinch runner Daniel Cruz to tie the game and send the contest to extra innings.
Senior Michael Guerrero (0-1) pitched all four extra innings and struck out four Golden Griffins. In the 13th he allowed two runs, one of which was unearned, to suffer the loss on the mound.
Sophomore Brady Choban received no decision in the start. He pitched 3.2 innings, allowed six runs on six hits.
The top-seven in the batting order for Marshall each recorded multiple hits, led by Zach Inskeep's four and Luke Edwards three. Jaren Lovely finished with a team season-high five RBI.
Game Two: 2-2 Tie
Due to the opener lasting 13 innings, the second game was agreed to be played as a seven inning contest.
The Thundering Herd jumped on the Golden Griffins early, scoring a first inning run on a RBI groundout from Luke Edwards, scoring Geordon Blanton.
Freshman Cody Sharp pitched impressive in relief for the second consecutive Sunday, going 4.1 innings allowing just two hits while striking out six. He allowed no runs.
Marshall trailed 2-1 entering the final frame. With two outs and runners on first and second, Blanton delivered a clutch two-out hit to score Jordon Billups.
The contest was called due to darkness in the 8th inning, and with the inning being incomplete, the contest was ruled a tie.
Offensively, Blanton led the way with a 3-for-4 game at the plate. Billups went 2-for-3, and the duo scored the lone Marshall runs in the game.
Redshirt junior Jeffrey Purnell started his third game of the year, receiving no decision for the third straight start.
Marshall will be back in action Wednesday for a mid-week contest at Virginia Tech. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
