R-SOPHOMORE SEASON: Came to Marshall as walk-on, but earned scholarship for spring semester in 2015, then won the Herd’s field goal/PAT job in August camp, after graduation of Justin Haig … Made 18-of-25 field goal attempts for the season, including 3-for-4 in Herd’s 16-10 St. Petersburg Bowl victory over Connecticut … Perfect on 48 PAT tries … His 102 points led Marshall … Started season impressively with 12 consecutive FG conversions; didn’t miss until Week 9 win at Charlotte, ending a team streak of 19 in a row … His 12 straight FG conversions are the second longest streak in Herd history to Craig Ratanamorn’s 16 in 2008-09. Ratanamorn made 14 in a row in 2009 for the season record … After his 12 in a row, missed 5 of next 7 … Had three FG in two games – the bowl win and in win over North Texas … Kicked his longest FG in first quarter opening home win over Purdue, from 42 yards; later missed from 44, 43 and 42 … Was 17-of-20 inside the 40 … Made at least one FG in 11 of 12 games when called (no attempts in double-OT win at Kent State) … Herd enters 2016 season with 152 consecutive made PATs, 49 of those by Smith … Named to 2015-16 C-USA Commissioner’s Honor roll (3.0 or greater GPA).
R-FRESHMAN SEASON (2014): Spent 2014 season as backup to fifth-year senior PK Justin Haig, who holds several Marshall single-season and career records … Was perfect on only PAT attempts, in fourth quarter in win at FIU …Ttook over primary kickoff duties during the Conference USA championship win over Louisiana Tech, getting three kicks … Had nine kickoffs, including two touchbacks, averaging 62.8 yards in the Boca Raton Bowl victory over Northern Illinois … Made strong challenge for place-kicking job in August camp before veteran Haig won the job.
FRESHMAN SEASON (2013): Redshirted.
HERD FILE: Born Oct. 4, 1994 … Majoring in Digital Forensics … Starred at Alder High School in Plain City, Ohio, where he booted 52- and 51-yard field goals … Scored 100 points in his junior season (2011) … Was All-Ohio Division III first team kicker in 2011 after being All-Ohio Division IV third team selection in 2010.
